Supporting emotional wellbeing and mindfulness at
Warriapendi

At Warriapendi ELC, we understand that early childhood is a powerful time for shaping not only what children know, but who they become. That’s why we’ve created The Colourful Heart Project: a centre-wide initiative designed to nurture emotional wellbeing, build self-awareness, and support children in understanding their feelings from the inside out.

Grounded in informed practice this program offers children gentle, meaningful ways to explore emotions through colour, language, storytelling, movement and play.

Emotional wellbeing lays the foundation for learning, social development, and mental health. When children feel safe to express how they feel whether it's joy, worry, frustration, or sadness they:

- Form stronger connections with others

- Develop empathy and resilience

- Learn how to navigate challenges and change

- Are better equipped to engage, learn, and thrive

By supporting children in understanding their emotions, we’re not just responding to behaviour we’re helping shape the lifelong skills they’ll carry into school, relationships, and the world around them.

Why wellbeing matters

How the program is implemented

Our educators thoughtfully embed The Colourful Heart Project into daily routines, interactions, and the learning environment. You might see:

  • Morning check-ins using colour-coded emotions

  • A dedicated Calm Corner where children can rest and reset

  • Emotion-focused story times, art experiences, and mindfulness activities

  • Visual prompts and language that normalise and validate all feelings

  • Gentle co-regulation and responsive care, especially during challenging moments

This is not a one-off program or a set of activities it’s a whole-service approach to creating a culture of care, connection, and emotional safety.
